Snowflake Cookies

Recipe By: Betty Crocker, c. 1960
Preparation Time: 2:00

Ingredients:
1/3 cup soft shortening, part butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 1/4 cups flour — sifted
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon lemon extract — or 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Shiny Glaze
3 cups confectioner’s sugar — sifted
4 teaspoons light corn syrup
1/4 cup hot water
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon lemon extract — or vanilla food coloring — if desired silver dragees

Directions:

Mix thoroughly shortening, sugar, egg, flavoring. Sift together dry ingredients and stir in. Chill 1 hour. Heat oven to 400 F.. Roll dough 1/8″ thick on lightly floured board. Keep dough chilled, rolling 1/4 at a time. Cut with star cutter. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 6 to 8 minutes, or until delicately browned. Decorate cool cookies with Shiny Glaze.

Shiny Glaze: Mix all ingredients until smooth and glossy. Cover. Stack cookies on rack in pairs with points of top star between points of bottom star. Place rack over pan. Pour 1 teaspoon glaze over snowflakes. While glaze is still soft, transfer cookies to waxed paper and decorate with silver dragees if desired. Let cookies dry before storing.

Makes 4 dozen.
